Fassi F545RA.2 at a height of 130 metres: performance and precision for Warsaw’s UPPER ONE

Modern architecture requires engineering solutions without compromise. The installation of the F545RA.2 knuckle boom crane on the roof of the UPPER ONE skyscraper, currently under construction in Warsaw's Central Business District, demonstrates how FASSI technology goes beyond traditional operational limits. The installation, expertly handled by HEWEA, Fassi's official distributor for Poland, saw the machine positioned at a height of 130 metres to ensure the continuous maintenance of the building's critical infrastructure, including its HVAC systems.

Extraordinary Operation: 130 Meters above Aleja Jana Pawła II

An exceptional scenario, even for Europe's most advanced construction sites. The Fassi F545RA.2 crane was lifted by a tower crane to the top of the 34-story skyscraper. Positioned 130 metres above the ground, the crane was safely mounted and anchored to the roof slab.

Its operational duties will involve handling, positioning, and replacing heavy components during extraordinary maintenance operations, including the HVAC systems that serve as the "lungs" for the entire complex.

F545RA.2: Fassi engineering serving major construction projects

The selection of the Fassi F545RA.2 model is the result of a thorough technical evaluation. Operating on a skyscraper roof imposes extreme requirements: high lifting capacity combined with the lowest possible dead weight, millimetric precision in tight maneuvering spaces, and zero tolerance for error.

Here are the key Fassi technologies behind the success of this operation:

  • Ultra-High Strength Steel (UHSS): the use of special structural steel with high yield strength allowed Fassi engineers to reduce the machine's tare weight while increasing rigidity and load moment—a key factor in meeting the maximum allowable load-bearing capacities of the roof slab.
  • Fatigue Resistance (FWD Technology & Cast Quality Components): the FWD (Fewer Welds Design) geometry minimizes structural welds in favor of single-plate bent elements, ensuring optimal elasticity and long-term durability under load. Critical stress-concentration zones utilize high-performance cast steel components (Cast Quality).
  • ProLink and XP (Extra Power) Systems:
    • ProLink: The double toggle lever system allows the main boom and jib to angle above the horizontal line (by 10°–15° and 10°–20°, respectively). This enables precise maneuvering under low ceilings and within tight technical roof corridors.
    • XP (Extra Power): At critical moments, the system activates a power reserve, slightly reducing speed to yield a significant increase in lifting capacity.
  • Hydraulic distribution and movement dynamics (D850 & Flow Sharing): The D850 digital distributor features an anti-saturation system and Flow Sharing (FS) functionality to proportionally distribute hydraulic oil. The operator can execute multiple complex boom movements simultaneously while maintaining perfect smoothness, even when lifting delicate HVAC components.
  • RCH/RCS Radio Control: The remote control handset with a graphic display provides the operator with complete freedom of movement and full visibility, enabling millimetric control of every maneuver from any location on the roof.
